By the way...
Apparently [yesterday] was Easter, and Christians were duking it out with non-Christians and there were some pretty harsh words and some wicked retorts going around. I don’t really understand how being argumentative is a good way to celebrate Easter?
I think Atheists could probably get together and enjoy the company of their friends and families every day, and Christians shouldn’t be upset. I mean, isn’t it a good thing for people to be happy together? I think so. Fellowship is an important thing to Christians, but it’s not exclusive to believers, nor is celebration. Why would we want to take away a celebration? Because a person hasn’t “earned it” by virtue of their beliefs? How could anyone have the right to make that call? Even amongst Christians, any holiday or ritualistic experience will be celebrated differently from one person to the next, and it’s obvious we don’t have the privilege of determining what’s best for others.
Christians, perhaps above all, should know how we play this game: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; … but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15) If you believe that Jesus was born, if you believe He died on the cross for your sins, and if you believe in eternal salvation, that’s really awesome; that should mean you also understand patience, kindness, and tolerance. Why would you not want to love your brothers and sisters who have chosen not to serve the Lord? If the Bible says that God demonstrated his love for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8), why would Christians not do the same?
I know that the internet can bring out the worst in people, and I appreciate that people feel the need to defend their faith. It’s beautiful that people have that kind of passion for their beliefs, whatever those beliefs may be. Still, I think it’s best if everyone can be respectful. Christians, turn the other cheek, not only because it is what Jesus would do (Matthew 5:39), but because it is what’s kind.
And non-Christians, please be kind as well. The vast majority of you are good-hearted and gracious, so please don’t set that aside to humiliate someone just because you disagree with their world-view.
